The Lockheed L-1011 TriStar, commonly referred to as the TWA TriStar, was a wide-body passenger jet that was manufactured by Lockheed Corporation between 1968 and 1984. Trans World Airlines (TWA) was the launch customer for the TriStar in 1972, ordering a total of 41 aircraft.
The TWA TriStar featured a three-engine configuration, with each engine mounted on the tail of the aircraft. It had a maximum seating capacity of 400 passengers and a range of up to 4,000 nautical miles. It was designed to compete with the Boeing 747 and the McDonnell Douglas DC-10.
In addition to flying domestic and international routes for TWA, the TriStar was also used by several other major airlines, including Delta Air Lines, Eastern Air Lines, British Airways, and Pan Am. However, the TriStar struggled to compete with the Boeing 747 and DC-10, and production of the aircraft was eventually discontinued in 1984.
Today, no TWA TriStars remain in service. However, several are preserved as museum exhibits and in private collections.
